REPORT

Grange Pond was the venue for Championship match 18, and on a cool autumnal day it was clear that many of the anglers pegged away from the island would struggle for bites, especially as because of the shelter given by surrounding trees, there was little wind on the lake’s surface.

Matt Gaetto continued his sparkling form with another excellent performance.  Drawn on island peg 28, Matt fished pellet waggler all match to catch 7 carp (weighing up to 8 lbs each) to put 39-05 on the scales for a clear win.

On the next peg, Les Smedley made excellent use of his peg to catch five carp, one on bomb and pellet and the other four on pellet waggler, to weigh 25-07 to task second place.

On peg nine, Dave Kent opted for bomb and pellet from the start and soon had indications.  The tactic produced two carp (to about 8 lbs), to which he added a further carp on meat from the margins and five skimmer bream taken on expander pellet at 13m.  Dave’s 23-14 secured him third place overall by a mere one ounce from Jonathan Leivers (island peg 22) whose 23-13 weight included 11-04 of “silvers” which clearly won the day’s silvers prize.

Alf Starling was fifth with 7-03 from peg 13, Malc Munn sixth with 6-05 from peg 2.

The race for the 2020 Championship has reached the stage where some of the competing 37 anglers are having to drop points (as only the best 15 results to count).  Although the top four dropped points, all were able to replace them with improved totals, and top placings remain the same after match 18 as: John Adamson 245; Mick Lager 225; Les Smedley 224; Dave Kent 220.  The next four anglers (Keith White 182, Matt Gaetto 181, Dave Cotterill 172 and Steve Hoult 169) are all able to continue adding new points to their totals and the title remains open to any of this top eight able to string together a good run of results in the remaining matches.

The next two matches are at Portland Fishery (on Canal Lake) on Sunday 18th October, then at Birch House Lakes (on Horseshoe) on Sunday 25th October.  Competitors must book their place with the Match Secretary at least 2 days before each match.
