REPORT

The Sixteenth LEVAS Championship Match of 2019, also for the Kathleen Smith Cup, was fished on Sunday on the large Penninsular Lake at Blake Hall Fishery, Cheadle, Staffs, where the day commenced with an excellent breakfast at the on-site Café, before the anglers moved onto the bankside on a cold damp morning.

The early sunshine soon disappeared and for most of the day it was dull and overcast with a cold wind, and the fish responded by dropping into the areas of deeper or sheltered water between pegs 44 and 58.

On peg 55, Les Smedley enjoyed a great day, and fishing pellet on the hook and switching between pellet waggler, bomb and method feeder Les caught carp to around twelve pounds in weight to amass 83-14 for a clear win.

On peg 46, Mick Lager started on bomb and pellet and caught several carp before switching to the pole in the margins in the latter stages where he caught three big carp, all around the twelve pound mark, to boost his weight to 64-04 for second place.

On peg 48 Dave Kent also started the match on bomb and pellet, and after losing his first fish landed two in quick succession. After a long period of inactivity, he decided to switch to pole at 5m with expander pellets and landed several carp, including a real beast, a common carp of 23-02, his personal best ever fish. His total of 54-07 put him in third place overall.

The attached photos show the top three placed anglers after the results were announced, Les kneeling, Mick seated and Dave standing, and Dave Kent with his personal best carp of 23-02.

Steve Wilcock (peg 45) was fourth with 27-05, Nigel Brailsford fifth from peg 37 with 25-06, Malc Munn in sixth with 24-10.

With Championship leader Steve Hoult (236 points) missing the match, Les Smedley gained 20 points on him and is within striking distance of the lead on 219. Paul Marriott has gained a place to move into third place with 200, John Adamson is in fourth on 196, Rob Pembridge in fifth on 184.

The next match is at Rycroft on both Canals on Sunday 3 November.
