REPORT

On a warm, overcast and “muggy” Sunday morning, members of Long Eaton Victoria Angling Society (LEVAS) gathered in the car park at their local fishery, Grange Pond, to contest the Richardson Cup, and also compete in the Match Six of the 2019 Championship Series.

The match commenced at 10.15 am, and to be honest there was very little to report as the fish failed to co-operate. There was little evidence of fish activity on the surface, and around the lake anglers struggled for bites.

Steve Hoult (on peg 4 for the second consecutive year) picked up an early carp on the method feeder, and this was the start of another excellent result for him. He switched to the pellet waggler and was rewarded with another carp, close to 10 lb in weight, and after a period of great activity and no reward in the difficult breeze, he switched to pole at 14.5m fishing shallow with a hard, banded pellet, and “pinging” 6ml pellets at his float. This proved regularly productive and Steve ended the match with a superb 49-09 for yet another comfortable win.

On peg 3, Steve Welch, after trying various methods, eventually placed his faith in the pellet waggler and managed to winkle out several carp for 25-10 to take second place, Ivan Carrier (island peg 27) taking third place with a feeder caught 14-11.

John Adamson converted his three bites on peg 29 into three fish, two carp (one of 3 lb on the feeder, one of 5 lb on paste from the margin, and a 5 lb bream on paste from the margin) to steal the final money place with 13-05.

Les Smedley (peg 26) was fifth with 11-14, Janet Skinner filling sixth place with a carp and several small fish for 5-12 from peg 23.

It was noticeable that all the top six came from the windward end of the lake, and that those in the sheltered pegs struggled for bites.

At the moment, after only six matches, Steve Hoult is running away with the Championship. His third win lifts him to 113 points, well clear of second placed Rob Pembridge (77 points). Paul Richardson has moved into third place on 77, Dave Cotterill fourth on 69, John Adamson on 66 points completing the top five.

Match 7, for the Fletcher Cup, is also the Annual Outing, and will be fished at Packington. There will be a breakfast before the match and a “roast” meal afterwards as part of the day’s procedures. Members need to book their place with Dave Kent as soon as possible to ensure a place.
