REPORT

Grange Pond in Long Eaton was the venue for the A Fletcher Memorial Trophy match, which was also round 14 of the LEVAS 2020 Championships.

The brisk wind was blowing into the high numbers and it was expected that these may dominate but most of the lake’s carp had other ideas and appeared to have congregated around the new floating islands that had been temporarily tethered to the existing island until they are permanently sited.

Pond regular Richard Lyon on one of his favourite pegs, 22, dominated the match.  He alternated between pellet waggler (baited with worm) and bomb and pellet, fished on the same line towards the island, and caught carp steadily throughout the match to put 64-13 on the scales for the win.

On the next peg (21) Steve Hoult fished pole at 11m with pellet over micros, and although he targeted bream, he caught several decent carp as well as 3-15 of bream, then added a couple more carp from the margins on maggot to end with 40-02 and second place.

Third placed Dave Borrington was on the other side of the winner on peg 23.  His three fish, which included a big “double” were all caught by casting close to the island.

Malc Munn on peg 28, who was also able to cast relatively near the island, had four carp on method feeder for 23-08 to take the final top prize with 23-08, just a mere seven ounces in front of Paul Pykett’s 23-01 of feeder caught fish from peg 4, Matt Gaetto’s 22-12 coming from peg 13 in sixth place.

The winner of the “silvers” prize was Alan Starling who included 7-15 of “silvers” (non-carp) in his 15-00 total, which included 2 carp, for 11th place overall.

The Championship top five remain the same, the only real mover being Steve Welch who has jumped from 9th to 6th position.

Match 15 is on Lake Two at Makins Fishery, when members will also fish for the Centenary Cup.
