REPORT

The Covid-19 “Lockdown” massacred the remainder of the LEVAS fixtures for 2020, as the three remaining matches (including the Christmas Fur & Feather match) were all scheduled for that period.  Because most venues were already fully booked it was impossible to re-arrange all of the matches, although our Match Secretary, David Kent, managed to find one venue with a clear date, Robinwood Lakes, so managed to re-arrange the Fletcher Cup (and Fur & Feather) for Sunday 13 December.

The 18 anglers who fished had to endure horrible conditions, as continual rain and strong, gusting wind made conditions difficult, but in spite of the pre-match pessimistic forecasts, Robinwood Lake Two fished remarkably well with three weights over fifty pounds, 15 anglers weighing in, and, I believe, everyone catching a fish.

It appeared that Les Smedley was heading for a comfortable win until Bill Peach’s golden final hour which produced a carp a cast for him to sneak victory.  Bill, on peg 12 with the wind “off his back”, fished corn on the bomb and caught carp to around eight pounds to total 72-03 to take the turkey and the Fletcher Cup.

Les Smedley (on peg 3) was in one of the few sheltered areas on the lake which enabled him to comfortably fish pole, and baiting with punched bread he caught carp steadily, especially during the first three hours after which sport for him slowed a little. His catch of 64-01 included fish to around seven pounds which secured second place.

On peg 21, John Adamson faced the wind and rain for the duration of the match.  He caught three small carp first three casts on bomb and corn before finding a snag and having to pull for a break.  After re-tackling he found sport had slowed a little, but caught carp is short bursts throughout the first three hours, only adding two fish in the final two hours (one of which weighed around eight pounds) for a final weight of 56-07 and third place.

Alan Starling was fourth with seven carp for 33-03 from peg 18, Andy Buckle fifth with a three carp 26-11 from peg 15, Keith White (peg 22) in sixth with 18-15.

With pools prizes going to the overall winner then four zonal winners, zone winners were: Mick Lager (6-03 from peg 8); Andy Buckle; John Adamson; Steve Warrener (8-03 from peg 24).

With this also being the final LEVAS 2020 Championship match, Club Champion this year is John Adamson with 258 points, with Les Smedley in second on 242 and Mick Lager third on 233.

Thirty-seven anglers competed in the Championships this year, and the remainder of the top ten are: Dave Kent 231 points; Matt Gaetto 220; Dave Cotterill 218; Keith White 211; Malc Munn 190: Steve Welch 171 and Steve Hoult 169.

A special thanks to Match Secretary David Kent for organising and running the matches throughout the year, which has been particularly difficult with the Covid-19 interruptions which led to competitions in May and November being cancelled and lots of juggling dates and booking venues.  All credit to him that we managed to fish 22 of the 24 scheduled events.
