REPORT

For a change the match was fished on a very pleasant day, warm and sunny and with a light breeze, and with the lake showing a nice colour, LEVAS members that had gathered to fish for the W Hardy Memorial Trophy, and also Championship round five, were quite optimistic.

For many of the members the match was very much similar in that it started and ended well, but in the middle part proved a struggle.

John Adamson (peg 12) started with paste “down the track” and was quickly rewarded with a carp of around 6-00 and then a 1-00 bream. After a blank 15 minutes, seeing fish activity in the reeds against, the island he extended his line of attack to 13m, dropping his paste tight to the reeds. This produced an ide over a pound, and several carp between 1-00 and 4-00 in weight, quickly pushing his total to around 25-00 in the first hour.  He then suffered a three-hour spell in which he only caught a few tiny roach and bream (all on paste), and nothing at all on the feeder. With 90 minutes to go he decided to concentrate on his margins, and slowly these started to produce carp from one to six pounds in weight, enabling him to put 79-10 on the scales for the win.

The on-form Mick Lager took second place from peg 24 with 72-14 of mainly carp, mostly falling to worm.  For some reason Mick had a high number of “hook pulls” which seriously affected his weight and cost him the win.

Dave Cotterill, on peg 2, filled the third place with 60-07 of mainly carp.  Dave caught fishing banded 6ml pellet both short and long in the early stages, and then fishing corn on the hook over pellet feed in the margins towards the end.

Fourth placed Rob Pembridge (peg 18) included 10-10 of silvers in his 53-11 total, fifth placed Dave Kent (peg 36) had 46-01, with Les Smedley (peg 7) taking sixth place with 45-01.

The “Silver King” (winning the prize for the best bag of silver fish) was Bill Rutherford who included 27-10 of silvers in his seventh overall catch of 41-06.

After five matches the Championship leader is Keith White on 84 points, with Mick Lager chasing on 81.  Dave Cotterill has 71, Dave Kent 68, followed by John Adamson with 66, Les Smedley’s 64, and Nigel Brailsford’s 52. The full top 10 is shown on the Match Result 2020 section of this website.
