REPORT

The LEVAS Championship Match 11, which was also for the Mansfield Cup, was fished on the Folly Pool at the Riddings Fishery, a joint match with the Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Angling Club, was attended by 18 anglers on a chilly but bright late summer’s day.

After a hearty breakfast, by which it had warmed up a little in the sun, anglers set off to their designated pegs, the match-length being permanent pegs 6 to 24 around the far end of the 33 pegs on the lake.

Excepting the odd early fish from the pegs in the high teens, most experienced a slow start, although the top two, Les (Bow) Overmass and Steve Wilcock, pegged directly opposite each other on 8 and 24, both had relatively early fish, Bow’s on the bomb and Steve’s falling to pole and paste fished short.

Although Steve caught relatively steadily throughout the five hours, all by fishing short and in the margins, in the latter stages Bow had the fish in a feeding frenzy in his margins, and by feeding casters baiting with worms, he caught carp to around eleven pounds on the pole through the last hour for a magnificent total of 92-06 for a clear win.

Photos are of the top two.

Steve’s final tally of 87-15, which included carp to around eight pounds, all on paste fished short, and in the margins, gave him second place.

Mick Lager (peg 9) filled third place with 67-01, Paul Skinner (peg 6) was fourth with 54-09, Dave Cotterill fifth from peg 21 with 47-13 and Malc Munn sixth from peg 22 with 45-09.

The leading four in the Championships all had poor results, but retained position, although the gap has shortened between them and the rest of the field. The leaders are: Steve Hoult 184, Rob Pembridge 140, John Adamson 139, Paul Marriott 138, Les Smedley 133, Paul Richardson 124, Dave Cotterill 116, Paul Skinner 111, Ivan Carrier 108 and Steve Wilcock 105.

Match 12 will be on Sunday 8th September at Makins Fishery on Lake Two.
